Ahwaz is one of the major cities in Iran and the capital of Khuzestan province. The largest oil producing company in the country, called the National Oil and Gas Corporation, is located in this city. The city of Ahwaz is the third largest city in Iran after Tehran and Mashhad and has a population of over 1,700,000. Ahwaz is divided into eastern and western parts by passing the big river Karun. Ahwaz also has a historical significance and since the Sassanid era has been one of the most important regions.
The historic attractions of Ahwaz include the White Bridge and the Black Bridge, Sorto Rosepour Church, the House of the Mapar, Moin El-Tojar Caravanserai and the Museum of Contemporary Arts.
