Iran desert animals

As a country with four seasons, Iran has an enormous diversity of animals in each different part of it. In this article, we try to get you acquainted with the animals which live in this beautiful country’s deserts. So let’s get started with Iran desert animals.

What you should most expect: snakes!

One of the most dangerous but beautiful Iran desert animals that you have to be careful about while visiting a desert in Iran is the snake. Snakes have a large diversity in Iran. One of the most poisonous snakes among Iran desert animals is the European cat snake or the Soosan snake. This creature can be found in hot climates, so the deserts are the perfect place for it to inhabit.

Another type of snake that lives in deserts of Iran, is Echis. This animal is also known as the saw-scaled viper or the red carpet viper. This kind of snake is responsible for a huge amount of snakebite victims. Unlike its reputation for being deadly, it has tiny size and is around 35 cm.

What you should most expect snakes

A wonderful variety, some dangerous and some safe…

There are other types of Iran desert animals except for snakes. One of the most popular Iran desert animals is the monitor lizard. It has about 80 species and is mostly found in Asia and Africa. It can easily swallow the whole prey and swims very well.

There are also some harmless kinds of Iran desert animals. Chinkara or the Indian gazelle is one of them. It has a long and delicate body and is also one of the fastest animals ever. Usually, the only enemy in nature for this beautiful animal is Cheetah.

Cheetahs can also be found in this country’s deserts. Asiatic cheetah is an endangered animal due to the excessive huntings by humans.

Wild goat is another famous creature in the Iran desert animals group that is found in most of the hot and dry areas. Nowadays it is

endangered because of poaching.

The golden eagle lives in many different areas. They usually eat little rabbits or other ground squirrels. Between Iran desert animals it is known for killing fawns by throwing them off the cliffs and eating them.

One of the astonishing Iran desert animals that you might bump into while having a tour in this country’s deserts is the Lantrodectus terdecimguttatus or simply the black widow spider. It is also known as the brown widow spider as well. It belongs to the Theridiidae family.

The reason that they named it the black widow is because the female spider, kills and eats the male just after mating. Also, female ones usually have bigger sizes than male spiders.

There are so many Iran desert animals that might surprise you. One of them would be the Ophiomorus streeti or the street’s snake skink. As all of us probably know, snakes do not have any hands or any legs at all. Instead, they crawl on the ground. Well, this snake has hands and legs!

Street’s snake skink usually is active on days. They dig some holes in the ground and hide in it and wait for their prey to arrive.

Another dangerous creature in between Iran desert animals is the Hemiscorpius Kashkayi that is a

member of the Hemiscorpiidae. It has around 15 species till now. From these 15 species, 6 ones have been found in Iran until today. This Scorpius has cytotoxic in its poison which can cause skin Necrosis or damage the liver.

unfortunately, 2 up to 5 percents of the victims pass away because of this poisonous animal.

Androctonus Australia or the North Africa fat-tailed scorpion is not a native to the middle east or Iran. Still, since it has been seen in some areas of the country, it does count as one of the Iran desert animals.

It grows up to 10 cm and has a strong and broad tail. It does not like to live in wet places so deserts are the best choice for them. It can climb vertical surfaces easily and is mostly active at night. Its behavior is known usually as aggressive and hostile. The word “ Androctonus Australias “means the southern killer. Unlike most of the other small Iran desert animals that dig holes to hide in and protect themselves from the gales, this scorpion can stand strong winds without getting hurt. Thanks to the hard parts of its body, it does not get hurt easily.

The best way to avoid the stingers, is to avoid camping around rivers, etc. wet places are the best place for insects to grow. Also, do not forget that wearing clothes with light colors can help you see any insects or small animals walking on your body. If there were any stingers on your body, avoid to scratch them. Instead, wash them with cold water and soap and use calamine or any alike medicines.
